What is Globr IM?

Globr Instant Messenger is a mobile application that allows cross platform instant messaging across languages with real-time translation. Our patented technology allows our users communicate with one another in their preferred language thereby facilitating far more natural, easier communication.

How much does it cost?

Globr is free to trial for the first 12 months and is just 0.80p a year afterwards.

What devices are currently compatible with the Globr application?

As of now, Globr is available on all Android devices. (iOS 7 coming soon)

What is the history behind the name ‘Globr‘?

The name Globr seemed to fit that description well. The name came about while trying to find a name that symbolised truly “Global communication”.

What‘s the story, how did Globr start?

The idea believe it or not came out of a romantic encounter between Globr founder Jimi Ayoku and a young Russian hottie (cliche right), who between them found the language kept getting in the way. Jimi began working on the concept of seamless translation for instant messaging and, after about a year and a half of development, Globr is finally ready to launch.

How can I sign up?

We‘re currently in public beta on Android and you can download the Globr app directly from the Google Play Store or from our website.

What languages are currently being translated?

Globr currently supports the following languages: Arabic, Bulgarian, Chinese, Croatian, Czech, Danish, Dutch, English, Estonian, French, German, Hungarian, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Lithuanian, Polish, Romanian, Russian, Spanish, Swedish, Turkish and Ukrainian. We will be adding more languages in the coming months as we prepare to exit beta.

How do I change my profile Picture?

Profile pictures can be updated from the profile window. Select menu then 'Profile' and click on the picture frame.

When I travel abroad, will I still be able to use Globr?

Yes, so long as you have a working internet connection (i.e. a data plan on your carrier's network or a Wi-Fi connection with internet access)

How can I share media and other data?

Globr allows you to share pictures and videos by tapping the video, picture or camera icon availlable in the chat window. Select picture or video from your galery, take a new picture or record a new video. Globr also allows you to tag your pictures and have the tags translated automatically to the reciepint laguage on delivery.

How can I invite my friends to join Globr?

In order to chat with contacts on Globr, everyone must have the Globr application installed and activated on their phones. If some of your friends and family are not yet on Globr, it is easy to invite them to join in! You can send a Globr invitation via our My Contacts feature. This allows you to send an SMS or email with a download link. Depending on what phone you are using, you may also see an option to send an invitation on another messaging application, or to post a message on Facebook telling your friends about Globr and directing them to a download link. Please note: If you choose the SMS option, standard SMS rates apply. We recommend that you make sure you have an adequate SMS plan with your provider before sending SMS invitations.

How do I add a friend?

You can add friends by using the Globr search friends feature. This feature allows you to add people who may not be on your phone's address book. You can search by the users Globr handle or by individual telephone number. Globr also automatically adds friends on your phone's address book. If you cannot see your friend in Globr, please follow these steps: Ensure that your friend has Globr installed on their phone. Double check that your friend's phone number is entered correctly in your phone's address book.Enter the number the same as you would if you were to make a phone call to that person. If this is an international phone number, do not use any exit codes or leading 0s. Start all international phone numbers with a + sign, followed by the country code. If you still do not see your friend in your Globr list, it is possible that your friend does not have Globr. It's easy to invite your friends to Globr so that you can all enjoy the application together.

How do I change my chat language?

Chat language can be changed from the profile window. Select menu then 'Profile' and tap on the language frame.

I am bilingual can I chat with my friends in different languages

Yes you can, simply change your profile language to a Globr supported language, you have to change your keybaord language as well to accommodate the language specific characters.

Can I view a received message in its original language

Yes, Globr’s proprietary speech bubble allows you to view both the original text and translated text by simply swiping the speech bubble. If you swipe the outgoing message speech bubble, the text will be displayed in the language of the recipient. On the other hand if you swipe the incoming message speech bubble, the text will be displayed in the language of the sender which maybe different from your current profile language.

What is the Interactive Speech Bubble (ISB)

The Interactive Speech bubble (ISB) allows the user to incoming and outgoing messages in the languages of both the sender and the recipient simply by swiping to the left or right of the respective speech bubbles.

Why can't I connect to Globr?

The good news about most connection issues is that they are pretty easy to diagnose and fix. Below are a few of the most common reasons for this problem, and steps for troubleshooting each. The most common reason why you cannot connect to Globr is because your phone is temporarily not connected to the internet. To ensure you have a working internet connection, check the following: You have a data plan on your carrier's network or a Wi-Fi connection with internet access. The signal strength of the Wi-Fi or data network is good and the phone is connected to the network. Open a webpage in your phone browser to see if it loads. If it does, your phone is connected to the internet! Reboot your phone.

Why can't I send or receive messages on Globr?

There are many solutions to this problem, and we will walk you through them step by step in this article. The most common reason why you cannot send or receive Globr messages is a bad internet connection. If you are absolutely sure Globr is connected to the internet, there are a few other possible reasons why Globr messages are not going through: Your phone needs to be rebooted. Turn your phone off, wait 30 seconds, turn your phone back on. The number of the contact you are trying to message on Globr has not been entered correctly on your phone.

Why does Globr use my phone number and my address book?

We ask for your phone number because that is how Globr routes chat messages between you and your contacts, similar to how the SMS system would. Your address book data is private to you. No one else using Globr has access to your address book data, unless you share the data. We value your privacy and we have not, do not, and will not ever sell your personal information to anyone. If you would like to learn more about our Privacy Policy, please take a look at our Privacy Notice. In order to prevent and reduce unsolicited spam messages, as well as to improve your in-app experience, Globr uses the phone numbers from your phone's address book. Globr does not store any of your information on anyone else's systems. Globr looks at the phone numbers in your address book, then checks to see which of those numbers are verified in Globr. This allows any Globr users from your address book to appear as contacts in your Globr contacts/ Select contact screen and the Chats screen. During this entire process, only the phone numbers are sent to Globr for lookup, securely, over an encrypted connection. No other information, such as names, emails, and addresses are sent. So that you know who you are chatting with, the app then displays the names from your address book.

Is it free to send messages over Globr?

Provided you have an adequate internet data plan for your smartphone and a current subscription in Globr, it is free to send and receive messages and media over Globr. Globr Messenger uses your phone's internet connection to send and receive messages, pictures, audio, video, location, and contacts. As long as your phone is not roaming and you have not exceeded your data limit, messaging over Globr should not cost you extra. If you are concerned about data usage, we recommend that you use a Wi-Fi connection, if possible. However, you should be aware of the following: If your phone is roaming, additional mobile data charges may apply. If you send SMS messages to your friends inviting them to use Globr, service charges from your mobile provider may also apply. What are those check marks next to my messages?

These checkmarks are actually very important since they are indicators that acknowledge the delivery of a message. Here is what they mean: < message successfully delivered to the server. << message successfully delivered to the phone of your chat partner. Note: this does not indicate that the message was read, just that it was delivered. Also note that in a group chat you will only see one check mark indicating that the message was successfully delivered to the server.
